A tiny device with huge energy and water insights

Smaller than a deck of playing cards, Copper’s indoor devices are compact, wireless energy and water monitors that consumers can easily set up themselves to gain usage transparency and personalized insights.

Copper’s indoor collectors use radio frequency (RF) technology to capture energy consumption data directly from existing electric, gas, or water meters (both smart meters and drive-by AMR meters) and share that data using the customer’s Wi-Fi network. Customers can then access near-real-time data, actionable insights and alerts, and utility messaging through the Copper mobile app, while utilities get real-time grid-edge visibility and intelligence through the Copper utility portal.

Copper setup

Simple setup

Copper’s indoor devices are designed to be easy for consumers to self-install, with no need for technical expertise or specialized equipment.

Once customers plug the collector into an outlet and complete the short set-up process in Copper’s mobile app, the hardware immediately captures data directly from their existing meters wirelessly. It’s that simple. Copper’s collectors are compatible with a wide range of existing meters, and—unlike other solutions—don’t require any meter retrofits or electrical panel installations.

More timely utility-grade data

Copper’s collectors provide near real-time energy usage data, allowing homeowners to get immediate feedback on their consumption habits.

Copper’s hardware can provide energy and water data as frequently as every 30 seconds, whether customers have the newest smart meters or older drive-by meters that are currently only reporting monthly to the utility. For utilities and research partners, this can provide a unique, lower-cost alternative to submeters for demand-side management (DSM) measurement and verification (M&V) while also providing a built-in channel for customer outreach and engagement.

Consumer empowerment

By making energy and water data readily accessible, Copper empowers consumers to make smarter choices, engage more directly with their utility, and identify new opportunities to save on their bills.

As a single device that unlocks near-real-time visibility into electric, gas, and water consumption and provides personally relevant insights and messaging, Copper’s indoor collector can fit well into an array of utility programs. From income-qualified direct install programs to deep energy retrofits, educational kits, utility marketplaces, or new time-varying rate structures like time-of-use (TOU) or dynamic pricing, Copper’s indoor equipment can empower customers and utilities alike with better data and an improved customer experience.

Smart home integration

Copper’s indoor collector offers flexible integrations to help consumers get the most out of their smart home energy management system.

Copper integrates with Samsung SmartThings to contextualize home energy consumption and allow homeowners to build automations based on criteria like time-varying rates or demand response event signals. Copper can also be integrated with a wide range of other smart home devices and distributed energy resources (DERs) to orchestrate distributed resources using timely demand-side data.
